Memory Jar

In my project based on Zora Neale Hurston's novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God", I have created a captivating 3D memory jar painting that encapsulates Janie's perspective. The jar is a memory jar, symbolizing the sense of security and warmth Janie experiences under Tea Cake's care. I have incorporated Vincent Van Gogh's mesmerizing starlight painting inside the jar. This artwork represents the magical moment when Janie first encounters Tea Cake and sits under the enchanting moonlight, sharing a profound connection filled with delight and joy. Using Van Gogh's starlight, I aim to capture the essence of this unforgettable encounter.

Moving towards the bottom of the jar, I have employed a Chinese ink wash-style painting technique, primarily utilizing darker colors. This portion of the painting portrays Tea Cake carrying his guitar case. The choice of darker hues in this section is intentional, as it symbolizes a sense of regret and sorrow. It alludes to the unfortunate fate that befalls Tea Cake, ultimately leading to his untimely death.

Through this intricate composition, I aim to convey the essence of Janie's experience within the memory jar. The jar itself acts as a sanctuary, preserving the beautiful moments shared between Janie and Tea Cake. The juxtaposition of the vibrant starlight painting representing their initial encounter and the somber ink-wash style painting depicting Tea Cake's departure creates a poignant narrative within the artwork. It serves as a reminder of the bittersweet life and the profound impact that cherished memories can have on our hearts.
